Weakening Aussie dollar a concern for tourism

April 30, 2015 12:49 am

The President of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, Dixon Seeto says the tourism industry is concerned about a weakening Australian dollar.

Seeto says this, combined with other factors, are a concern.

“The less purchasing power of the Australian dollar is obviously a concern to us in the tourism Industry because with Tourism and Holidays it depends on the disposable income and what you have spare to spend but then now going on holidays is very much part of life.”

Business Insider Australia reports the Australian economy continues to grow below trend and the Aussie dollar is expected to continue to fall.

Seeto says if it does worsen, it could be favourable for the tourism industry.

“The long haul holidays, say the USA, Europe or the UK maybe that segment of the traffic will revert to short haul. You get value for money coz its closer to home and instead of taking one long trip to these countries you take two short trips to Fiji.”

Australia and New Zealand provide the largest number of visitors to Fiji.
