Public transport needs more roads

A renowned bus company in the country is hoping that more funding will be provided in the 2016 budget to build more roads.

Tebara Bus Company Chief Executive Officer Alvin Maharaj says building more roads is vital for the increased number of motor vehicles.

He adds the spike in road traffic has made it difficult for public transport to operate.

“So this is one area that we are very concerned with that moving down the line over the next few years on how will buses operate on the one hand government is saying that they want to encourage the use of public transport and telling people to use public transport so making the infrastructure available to us but we are always playing a catch up game.”

Maharaj says buses need to get proper returns which can be put back into the the economy as investment.

Meanwhile the Tebara Bus Company is expected to receive eight new buses in the coming months including an electric bus from China.
