Proposed polling venues list out today

April 30, 2014 7:51 pm

The provisional list of proposed polling venues for the September elections is published in a lift-out in today’s Fiji Sun and Fiji Times.

The list can also be downloaded online on www.electionsfiji.gov.fj

The Elections Office says the venues listed are proposed at this time and should not be taken as final.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem says there may be some changes brought about by increases or movement in voter numbers or a venue being unavailable.

A venue may have one or more polling stations, depending on projected voter numbers and the arrangement of the property where polling will take place.

Saneem says the provisional list of polling venues is the first step for the voter to find the venue where he or she will vote.

The Fijian Elections Office will now commence to start moving voters who live near these polling venues into the voter list for these venues and where the venue has more than one polling station – into the voter list for that particular polling station. We expect to have a provisional voter list ready by the middle of May.

Meanwhile, Deputy Supervisor of Elections Michael Clancy says Fiji is on track to hold the elections on time.

As i have only been here a couple of days I’m just getting my head around it but what i have seen the planning is on track and at this stage i don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t have the election on the advertised day.

The public is urged to inspect the list and to inform the elections office if they believe a polling venue will need to be created for a settlement or a community.

Most of the venues identified are schools and community halls… the same ones used in the 2006 elections.
