July 8, 2016 8:02 pm

A Kadavu farmer convicted of cultivating marijuana has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment.

Apakuki Vitukawalu’s farm was raided by police in 2012 after a tip off from fellow villagers and police uprooted 154 marijuana plants.

Police then analysed 32 plants and charged Vitukawalu accordingly.

High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo in sentencing said Vitukawalu was lucky since police only analysed part of the haul and had he been charged for all 154 plants, Vitukawalu would have been given a longer sentence.

He will serve 11-years before parole.
