Lawyers investigated

December 6, 2015 11:39 pm

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority has received a number of complaints against some lawyers.

Acting Chief Executive Visvanath Das says lawyers are claiming Capital Gains Tax exemptions from FRCA but are not passing them on to their clients.

In one such complaint a lawyer collected 10% CGT on a property sale, and once given exemption, kept the money instead of handing it over to the clients.

Das says they will be lodging complaints with the Legal Practitioners Unit against lawyers involved in such practices.

FRCA is urging taxpayers who have doubts over their CGT exemption certificates to verify their application status as soon as possible.
