The Wolbachia mosquitoes project is on track to reduce local dengue outbreaks.

World Mosquito Program Project Coordinator Aminiasi Tavui says the percentage of mosquitoes carrying wolbachia continues to grow as expected.

Tavui says they have completed releases in Lami, Tamavua/Wailoku, Cunningham/Tacirua, Kalabu/Naveiwakau and Kinoya.

He says releases of these mosquitoes will continue across the rest of their project sites over the coming weeks and they will continue monitoring progress.

Tavui adds over time, it is expected that the majority of local mosquitoes will carry wolbachia, significantly reducing the risk of dengue, chikungunya or Zika outbreaks.
