Govt committed to providing safe water for all

April 16, 2015 9:48 pm

The government is doing all it can to provide access to safe drinking water for everyone says Speaker of the House Dr Jiko Luveni.

Speaking at the 7th World Water Forum in Korea, Dr Luveni says the government has many challenges in providing safe drinking water and basic sanitation services to everyone.

She says villages suffer from chronic outbreaks of water borne diseases like typhoid, leptospirosis, and dysentery and these diseases affect everyone in the community.

Dr Luveni says 50% of the population uses disease-laden water sources such as rivers, rain waters, and wells.

However, the government is in partnership with non-government organisations for water filtering projects.

The government has allocated $239m for the Water Authority of Fiji to address water problems this year.
