Government focuses on improving schools

August 4, 2018 7:20 pm

There are still some schools around the country that don’t have access to computers or even a science lab.

Education Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says government is looking at bringing the standards of these schools to the same level as those in the urban areas.

Speaking during the 2018/2019 national budget roadshow in Suva yesterday, Sayed-Khaiyum says that this is an area they’re focusing on.

“We need to have funds going forward to ensure it’s not just universities we’re focusing on but we’re focused on the primary and secondary schools because when these kids come through there and they have a solid base, they’ll do much better at universities. We have students coming in to university who have never seen a computer or never used one."

Meanwhile, the minister also highlighted the issue on shortage of teachers at degree levels for subjects such as Maths, Physics, Industrial Arts, Special Education, Early Childhood, English, Information and Technology.

He says Fiji has a lot of good teachers however, they only have Diploma qualifications and government has introduced programs to help upskill them.
