Despite a significant cutback in their budget, the Civil Service Ministry will continue focusing on providing responsive, efficient and effective services.

The Ministry has been allocated $3.3million for the new financial year.

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has clarified that cutback in the civil service budget will not affect the government services or the civil servants pay.

“A Lot of the Ministries when they used to factor in the cost of their salaries they would not necessarily plug in the amount that people used to get paid. I will give you an example so for example if you are a superintendent of police the salary range could be, I am not saying this is the amount but hypothetically from $55,000 to $70,000 but are actually maybe paid $57,000 but still within the range but what the HR department used to do was say ok we have 10 superintendent when they cost in the salary they plug in at $70,000, the maximum rate even they not getting paid at the maximum rate do not so that’s how they used to build upon the fat in the system.”

The Minister says this is why all the ministries were asked to provide the exact amount that is to be paid out.

The Minister for Economy says civil servants are now paid more compared to previous years.
