The first Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) camp for girls in Fiji will get underway from next week.

The four-day camp is organized by Graduate Women (Fiji) focused on increasing girls’ participation in STEM studies in the country.

It will also inspire them to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics by providing a safe, supportive and fun environment to learn about these subjects.

In Fiji, there are not many female role models in the STEM fields that can show them women they can become successful in these male-dominated sectors.

Also from a young age, girls are stereotypically perceived to be more inclined to less technical subjects to fulfill more traditional roles even after the completion of a university degree.

Only 30 free spaces are available for this inaugural camp, however, over 200 applications were received and Graduate Women Fiji says they have prioritized girls who live in informal settlements, live with a disability, or live in single-parent households for this first camp.

The camp is scheduled to be held from April 29th to May 2nd.
