The Fiji Meteorological Services is well resourced to receive national disaster information, according to the International Tsunami Information Centre.

ITIC Director, Laura Kong, says Fiji should continue to further develop its meteorological service to ensure the safety of the public during earthquakes and tsunami.

“The Met Service has very good telecommunication so that when the Pacific Tsunami Centre issues the message they are able to receive it quite quickly and share it with the mineral resources department that’s got the expertise on the earthquake location and also evaluating the tsunami threat.”

Kong says Met Service should ensure it communicates well with other stake holders so that warnings can be issues quickly and clearly.

She adds met officers should also continue to widen their capacity in assessing tsunami threats.
