Fiji Met office monitors possible El Nino

The Fiji Meteorological Services is currently monitoring the likelihood of an El Nino event.

Speaking to journalists from around the Pacific in Nadi this morning, Fiji Met Office Acting Senior Scientific Officer Arieta Daphne says this anticipated El Nino event will be a weak one.

According to Fiji Met, atmospheric and oceanic indicators are showing signs of a developing El Nino with more than 90% chance that it will establish towards the end of the year.

For the country, this will mean average to below average rainfall from now until January.

The Office also states that the anticipated El Nino event can cause a delay in the Wet Season for Fiji, which normally starts in November.
