A four-man team from Suva has come 6th in Surf Lifesaving event, Rescue 2012 in South Australia this week.

The World Lifesaving Championships held in Adelaide attracted over 4,000 competitors from over 40 different countries.

Team member, Eddie Tuicumu told Radio Australia he learnt to become a life saver at a hotel that he works at in Nadi.

Tuicumu also says that surf lifesaving is necessary in Fiji as the skills can be used in varying situations such as the flood season in Nadi.

The team acquired their skills with basic materials and had basic training which involved running and swimming at beaches with weights strapped around them.

The team is also looking into starting a lifesaving course and training programme so that they are able to educate staff members of hotels around the country once or twice every year.
