Doctors undergo specialist training

Sixty three doctors are currently undergoing specialist raining programmes.

This was confirmed by the Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate in parliament yesterday.

Usamate says the Health Ministry has been working together with the Fiji National University to put together a programme to develop specialists.

“We now have 63 doctors undergoing that training programme to become specialist. 11 have already graduated with their master’s programme and another 11 have undertaken their post graduate programme attachment after they have completed their training programme.”

Usamate say the trend is that the more skilled the worker, the more alluring the professional private health sector is which will beneficial to government with its public-private partnership in the pipeline.

He adds there are developments in terms of making sure that the right kinds of people are in place to deliver best health services to all Fijians.

$1.16m was allocated for doctors to undergo specialist training programmes.
