Constitution Day public holiday 2016

Government has announced a new public holiday called Constitution Day that will be observed on September 7 from next year.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum moved the Employment Relations Amendment Bill 2015 for urgent consideration by Parliament.

“The Bill Madam Speaker seeks to bring about those amendments and recognizing all the holidays. The Bill also proposes a new public holiday which will be called the Constitution Day which is 7th of September where people will get to know about the merits of the Constitution. It will be ingrained into our society. Many countries Madam Speaker uphold the Constitution in very high regard. Unfortunately some members on the other side don’t. And the reality is Madam Speaker that we need to create awareness about the Constitution"

The amendment to the bill will be debated in parliament tomorrow.
