Church has a unique role: Chong

The Catholic Church in Fiji has highlighted that a church has a unique role when it comes to the people’s social life.

Leader of the Catholic Church in Fiji Archbishop Peter Loy Chong made this comment while responding to the claims made by the Fijian Holdings Limited Group Chief Executive, Nouzab Fareed.

Fareed says children don’t want to listen about environment and politics as they go to the church to listen to the word of God.

“For a father in his sermon to say environment is unfriendly, mining should not be done, the leaders should be doing the right thing, it is wrong, I feel very uncomfortable."

Archbishop Peter Loy Chong says religion and church is about helping people, and part of helping is making people aware of the important and serious issues.

“For a church and religion you have to be interested in what’s facing your people. If you are not then what is the use of the church and religion if you are not interested in what your people are going through as it’s useless to be in a church or a religion if you are not concerned about the issues that involve people as the church is about people.”

Some of the issues that have been discussed in the church includes environment, political issues, domestic violence, and suicide and the Archbishop says this week they will be discussing about education.
