Acting Chief Pharmacist Dr Apolosi Vosanibola says the issue can be addressed if patients stop the overuse or the misuse of antibiotics.

“There are emerging issues whereby for example bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics and there is also lack of inventions of new antibiotics to kill or eradicate any bacteria in either animal health or in the human health.”

Dr Vosanibola says all medicines prescribed by a doctor should be completed to avoid bacteria from surviving which could mutate and become resistant to antibiotics.

He adds antibiotic resistance could affect anyone and is a threat to human health, food security and sustainable development.

The issue has also increase diseases in the animal sector lowering animal production.

Meanwhile, the Antibiotic Awareness Week was launched today.
