31 bars of cocaine found on an Island in Lau

A total of 31 bars weighing forty kilograms of cocaine were retrieved from an Island in the Lau group.

Fiji Revenue and Customs Service CEO Visvanath Das says the value of these illicit drug is estimated to be worth FJD$40million.

Das says upon receiving information, they worked in collaboration with police and the Fiji Navy in securing these bars from the island.

He commended the efforts of the people of the Island and those who ensured that the revenue and customs was immediately alerted about the drugs.

Das says surveillance in coastal communities and seas is an ongoing challenge for them, however with such assistance and cooperation from villagers, they can aim to protect our border from illicit trade.

Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho says the drugs are now in their custody and will be working closely with the Fiji Navy and Customs throughout the investigation process.
