The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission along with the Consumer Council of Fiji is concerned with bad business practices.

This includes those who use survey results as done recently by a radio station.

The FCCC has noted some businesses provide misleading statistics to gain more customers.

Chief Executive Joel Abraham says they have noted discrepancies when it comes to marketing.

“We’ve found that certain businesses are using misleading statistics who are involved in marketing and advertising using misleading statistics to get customers.”

Abraham says these discrepancies are found when traders pitch their products to advertisers who then lie about their audience reach.

“So we noted that when people come in to pitch their sales and marketing pitch, the advertisers are not giving a true picture. There are some that have come and said that 86% of Fiji listens to us.”

Consumer council’s Chief Executive Seema Shandil says businesses need to reflect on their practices and ensure they don’t fall on the wrong side of the law.

“I think you are the right person to look for answers and answer it yourself to see where have we gone wrong, where have the businesses gone wrong?”

The two consumer protection agencies are urging businesses to be fair as un-ethical practices can tarnish the reputation of the business community.
