Cricket Fiji is on the road to professionalism.

Cricket Fiji CEO, Sonny Henderson says for the first time in Fiji, overseas contracts are up for grabs.

“14 contracts are available for our local players and it’s a Tier system, sp we have one to four Tier. First Tier for instance are players invited to Australia to play and Tier 4 might be those who are up and coming and knocking on the door of the national team."

Saturday’s Elite Player league brought 44 of the country’s best to compete for a spot in the national team to tour overseas next year.

Henderson says games have greatly improved.

“It was a great day of matches, we’ve had 50 over matches which is great. I’ve heard in the past there used to be 30 overs max they;d get to but we got to 50 yesterday which is a great sign and a bright future ahead.”

Grabbing much of the selectors attention was the HMT Barbarians – displaying some impressive bowling skills against the Novotel Warriors.

More overseas partnerships are in the pipeline for men and women but it will all depend on how well Fiji does internationally next year.
