Fiji U23 through to Rio Olympics

The Vodafone Fiji Under-23 football side has qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This as the side beat Vanuatu in the final, 4-3 on penalty kicks in the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea last night.

Fiji skipper, Jale Dreloa slotted in the winning penalty.

Tony Tuivuna, Kolinio Sivoki and Iosefo Verevou all scored for Fiji, while Napolioni Qasevakatini and Garish Prasad missed for Fiji.

It is another history for Fiji as football will for the first time feature in the Olympics.

Meanwhile, in rugby league, Fiji lost the bronze medal play-offs to Tonga, 16-14.

In the men’s basketball final, Fiji lost 78-61 to Guam, to settle for the silver medal.

Fiji now has 14 gold, 21 silver and 19 bronze to remain in fifth spot on the medal tally.

PNG still leads with 36 gold, 23 silver and 22 bronze, followed by New Caledonia with 23 gold, 23 silver and 18 bronze.

Tahiti is in third spot with 23 gold, 16 silver and 14 bronze followed by Samoa with 18 gold, 18 silver and 1 bronze.
