Understand the importance of the ban: Koroilavesau

The Fisheries Ministry says it has received numerous complaints from fishermen in regards to the recent ban of beacher-de-mer and live coral.

Minister Semi Koroilavesau says these people need to understand the importance of the ban.

Koroilavesau says their team are on the ground offering villagers living in coastal areas fishing gears and advise on how to practice safer fishing methods.

“Fisheries is not doing this because we’re benefitting out of it. We don’t have any financial benefit out of it. We are basically trying to keep resources which are at critical levels now for it to regenerate and we are thinking about the future and not just thinking of short term gains.”

The Ministry says people need to understand the bans are put in place to ensure live corals and beach-der-mer grow back to a sustainable level for our future generation.
