Trade and investment plans for Fiji and Hong Kong

Fiji’s trade and investment flows from Hong Kong is set to accelerate further.

Permanent secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Shaheen Ali met with members of Fiji-Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce last month and are building on early trade mission and niche product, such as Fijian beer and water.

“The Permanent Secretary says there are plans to promote Fijian made products at this year’s Hong Kong Sevens as there will be a display of high-end niche Fijian made products amongst other things."

He adds that having a recognized Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong will provide leverage to marketing Fijian made products in the region.

The members of the Chamber outlined some of the projects they see potential for in Fiji and there are also discussions of scholarships for Fijian students to study in Hong Kong.

During the five day mission, the permanent secretary together with the Trade Commissioner/Consul-General and officials met with Chinese businesses that have shown interest in doing business in Fiji.

These included big names such as Alibaba Group, Power China and Sinohydro Bureau 12 Co. Ltd.
