SODELPA member Jale Baba has been charged by FICAC for making a false statement contrary to Section 27 of the Political Parties (registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.

Baba appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara at the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Between August 1st and October 15th, Baba is alleged to have made false statements on social media by publishing falsified Voter Lists.

He also published other false information related to the Voter lists on Facebook which he knew to be false or had no reason to believe to be true.

He’s represented by counsels Lynda Tabuya and Filimoni Vosarogo.

Baba was released on a $2000 bail bond with no sureties, told not to re-offend, instructed not to leave the country and told not to interfere with witnesses.

FICAC lawyer Francis Puleiwai requested a copy of bail and told the court to refer to Section 18(A) of the Electoral Act.

She told the court to act immediately but at the courts discretion.

However, Tabuya said there’s no need to rush the case as Baba is not contesting the general election.

Baba will reappear in court next Wednesday.
