Separate entity to oversee energy sector

The government is considering a regulatory authority to oversee the energy sector.

Minister for Infrastructure Pio Tikoduadua says this will ensure Monopolistic companies are better assessed and that consumers aren’t subjected to high tariffs.

“We trying to take the regulatory aspects away from the authority so that a separate entity will then overlook the authority to give it some you know some guidance in terms of how it conducts its business.”

Tikoduadua adds that they are in the process of divesting shares from FEA to customers and the people.

“To allow people to have particularly stakeholders the customers to have some share in terms of the company that’s generating the power for them.”

The ministry is looking at competitive prices for customers since factors in regards to power generation is beyond their control because external prices determines the cost of how much diesel is sold in Fiji.
