Review of policy on mobile phones in schools

The Education Ministry will fine tune the existing policy on mobile phones and similar gadgets in schools to clearly define the boundaries to all teachers, parents and students.

The decision was made after the ministry completed an internal investigation into an allegation that a teacher read the text messages of a student to other teachers and students.

The student, Navneeta Devi died of self-inflicted burns after the alleged incident in school.

The teacher has been cleared of any breach of Public Service Commission Code of Conduct.

Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy says the teacher will go through counseling to better handle similar situations in the future.

Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding Devi’s death and the ministry will await the outcome of it.
