Cakaudrove Provincial Council chair, Ratu Jekesoni Yavala, wants the mixing and consumption of homebrew in villages to be banned immediately.

Speaking during the Council meeting last week, Ratu Jekesoni said it is sad to see youths consuming homebrew in the villages week by week and nothing is being done about it.

Ratu Jekesoni says when youths consume homebrew, they usually create unnecessary scenes and disrespect the village elders.

He wants the suggestion to be taken up to the government to show that they are serious about addressing the issue.

Itaukei Affairs Board Deputy chief executive, Josefa Toganivalu, says there are existing laws that prohibit the mixing of homebrew as well as its consumption in the villages.

He adds, there are also laws that ban the cultivation of marijuana.

Toganivalu says what is lacking though is the enforcement of these laws.

He says in order to reinforce these bans, parents need to speak to their children at home first.
