Plastic bag levies for environmental activities

July 9, 2017 6:29 pm

Monies collected from the plastic bag surcharge will be utilized for funding environmental projects and activities around the country.

This will be channeled through the newly established Fijian Government for Environment and Climate Adaptation Fund.

Fiji Fuel Retailers Association Secretary, John Philp, says this is encouraging as the levies will be put to good use.

“If we’re charging ten cents all of us retailers for a little bin liner then the money is going for a good cause and not general funds. Governments now putting it in a special fund for the environment.”

Philp says all convenience stores at service stations will surcharge its customers ten cents for the use of every plastic bag from the first of next month.
