New rules for visiting inmates

September 25, 2012 7:18 pm

All visitors to inmates at any corrections institution will be thoroughly searched.

This is part of efforts by the Fiji Corrections Service to strengthen operational loopholes highlighted in the escape of the five inmates from Naboro.

Spokesperson Ana Tudrau says while investigations into the breakout are continuing – they are taking every effort to tighten security.

As well – remand inmates will now only be allowed two days in a week for visitations, only fruits will be allowed in by visitors and will have to be eaten in the visitation area, the number of family days will be reduced and only special visits allowed in circumstances such as death, business or for lawyers.

Tudrau says this is being carried out with urgency as they do not want a repeat of the breakout.
