Muaniweni farmers suffer

Residents in Muaniweni, Baulevu have suffered huge losses.

School teacher, Hirdesh Prasad says there are fourty-two households in the area and most of them are dalo farmers.

Prasad says the area has been flooded since Thursday which has damaged the crops.

“Actually everyone was preparing for good sales this Christmas but at this moment I can confirm that all the farms are damaged and nothing is left on the grounds – so it will be a very bad Christmas for the farmers here in Baulevu.”

Prasad says water is slowly receding and situation is under control. He says only two houses are under flood water and five houses have knee deep waters.

Residents have been unable to go to town to buy groceries and are running out of stock now.

Meanwhile the people in Somosomo, Naviti in the Yasawa Group have also lost their crops.

Villager, Jone Toe, says the heavy downpour over the past few days have cost them heaps, as they rely heavily on their crops of income.

Flood waters have affected five houses in the village.
