Military Officer Pita Matairavula, who is charged with sexual assault of escapee Iowane Bendito has been denied bail.
Matairavula was not granted bail on the grounds that the accused is a flight risk.
Magistrate Charles Ratakale says he is not persuaded that Matairavula will appear in Court to answer to the charge that has been put to him.
In his ruling Magistrate Ratakale noted the timing of Matairavula’s surrender – after his co accused was granted bail.
Matairavula is charged together with the three former police officers, Sanita Laqenasici, Jona Davonu, Semesi Naduka and a former soldier Filimoni Catimaibulu for the alleged unlawful and indecent assault of Bendito.
He had avoided arrest since October 2 and since Police failed to arrest him at his residence and at the Military Barracks.
Later they showed up at the High Court in Lautoka, where the accused was facing charges in relation to the death of Vilikesa Soko – who died in Police custody.
He has been remanded in custody until 27 November for mention.
