Maritime Surveillance is critical in protecting Fijian Waters.

This was highlighted by US Naval Secretary Thomas Modly with the Americans showing interest in navigating Fiji’s fishing grounds.

Modly says with the increase of economic activities in Fiji’s waters, more surveillance is needed to ensure that illegal activities are not occurring.

“You are clearly a maritime nation and we are also a maritime nation that depends upon the seas for commerce. As part of that we hope to be partners with you as you develop your own economy, build greater prosperity for your own people. We want to be a part of and part of that story for you.”

Modly adds the US Navy has recognized that maintaining strong partnerships and alliances is critical to providing more security for Fiji and the region.
