Makoi Maternity Unit now open 24/7

As part of the Health Ministry’s innovative strategies to modernize and enhance Fiji’s health services, the Makoi Maternity Unit which was opened in February this year is now operating 24 hours and 7 days a week.

The Unit which has been designed to conduct low risk maternity deliveries has as of this month carried out four deliveries and is gearing up for 30 deliveries next month.

The Makoi Maternity Unit is a state of the art facility that has been constructed with an investment of $6.83 million by the Fijian Government.

It’s also equipped with the latest medical equipment worth $300,000 to ensure the facility provides higher standards of maternal health care services to those in Makoi and the neighboring communities.

Minister responsible, Rosy Akbar says the expansion of services at the Makoi Maternity Unit reflects their ongoing commitment to provide safe, accessible and efficient quality care for the mothers.

On average the Makoi Maternity Unit attends to 300 mothers per month through the antenatal clinics with 119 new bookings recorded for the months of July and August this year.

The Unit has also broadened the health care services for child care and primary care services all under one roof.

Currently, the Unit has a team of 21 midwives.
