The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission rejects the idea of corporal punishment being re-introduced.

The Fiji Corrections Service has called for public discussion on the matter however Commission Director Ashwin Raj says corporal punishment is not the answer.

“The Constitution does not discriminate between those who have transgressed the law and those who are citizens. So it’s important that we consistently and equally apply the Constitution at all times.”

Raj doesn’t deny that criminals seem to be bolder and more prone to violence, but wants a deeper look at the reasons for this.
