The government will place more emphasis on improving international and domestic shipping services.

Transport Minister Jone Usamate says 90 percent of Fiji’s trade is through maritime transport.

“We have approximately 90% of our trade comes from maritime transport. Government recognizes the importance of the maritime sector as it supports growth and government is committed to ensure safe reliable and affordable shipping services for all Fijians.”

Usamate says they also aim to provide consistent services to maritime islands including the Lau Group.

This, he says – is to ensure that people in remote islands of Fiji receive timely services and ensure a consistent economic flow in terms of trade.
