The sugar farmers have made a lot of good recommendations during the recent public consultations says Lands Minister, Ashneel Sudhakar.

The consultations are being held by the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Sugar Ministry to get farmers’ views that will help them draft a National Sugar Policy.

Sudhakar says he is also part of the consultation as farmers are raising issues concerning their land.

The Minister says farmers have been very vocal about their plight.

“Some of the ideas that came to us we never expected from that crowd – but some good ideas came about. Like having some welfare schemes for cane cutters as well. Because you know cane cutters are not looked upon very highly in the society.”

The farmers have urged the FSC and Sugar Ministry to hold such consultations on a regular basis.
