Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has spoken highly of Chief Justice Anthony Gates.
Sayed-Khaiyum labelled him as someone who values principles over politics.
He says Justice Gates’ legacy in leadership is evident in the transformation of the country’s Judicial System.
The AG adds Fijians are now confident in the law system and this is due to Justice Gates commitment to transparency.
“You stood with the Fijian people, you stood for their rights to justice, and you put self-interest aside and you went for something bigger than yourself, the courage of this stance will never be forgotten.”
The Attorney General says Justice Gates is always firm on his stand to serve the Fijian people and while ensuring justice is maintained.
Justice Gates will be retiring from his position next week after 11 years of service.
Justice Kamal Kumar has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice with effect from April 8th until such time when a substantive appointment is made.
Justice Kumar has served on Fiji’s High Court since 2013 and is the chairperson of the Human Right and Anti-Discrimination Commission.
