Fiji’s fruit and vegetable intake is well below the recommended level says Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu.

Speaking at the 2018 National World Food Day celebrations in Sigatoka Seruiratu says people are not taking the recommended level of five servings of fruits and vegetables a day or 400g per day.

Furthermore, Seruiratu says over half the population are overweight or under- nourished and have micro-nutrient deficiency.

He says this is despite that fact that Fijians know that fruits and vegetable are important components of a healthy diet and that reduced consumption is linked to poor health.

Seruiratu says the challenge in Fiji was not only about feeding our people but also about providing nourishment in giving them healthier food.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day is “Our Actions Are Our Future. A Zero Hunger World by 2030 is Possible”.
