Reserve Bank Governor Ariff Ali and his deputy Esala Masitabua has praised the Code of Conduct Bill which has relevance to their vision and mission.
While making submissions on the Code of Conduct Bill to the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights yesterday, Ali highlighted that there will be no challenges in complying with the requirement of the Bill.
He proposed that the Director for the Financial Intelligence Unit to be included in the list of officials to whom the bill would apply.
“We note that the Director of Financial Intelligence Unit, a role established under the Financial Transactions Reporting Act 2004, and administratively reports to the Governor of the Reserve Bank is not included in the list. We propose that the role be included. I have spoken to the Director FIU and he agrees with this.”
Meanwhile, the Governor sought for clarification whether the intention of Schedule 5 Code of Conduct for Public Officials would be able to apply to the role of the Governor or to all employees and officers of the Reserve Bank.
Committee Chair Alvick Maharaj highlighted that every officer at the bank needs to comply with the Code of Conduct.
