Fiji voices concerns faced by fisheries sector at Tuna Forum

The 2015 Tuna Forum has given Fiji a chance to voice its concerns faced by the fisheries sector and how best to challenge these issues through global cooperation.

Ministry of Fisheries and Forests, permanent secretary, Inoke Wainiqolo says the forum is an opportune time for Fijian delegates to get first-hand information by the experts.

Wainiqolo added Fiji has relevant policies in place to conserve, manage and develop the fisheries sector to ensure long-term sustainable use for the benefit of the people of Fiji.

Wainiqolo stressed to the relevant tuna industries on the importance of global sources, to get other resources from outside countries in order to improve performance and output of the tuna industry.

The Director for INFOFISH, Dr Abdul Basir Kunhimohamed said total tuna landing in 2013 was around 5.1 million metric ton, out of which 52 percent was contributed from the Pacific region.
