Local artists look to revive jazz music in Fiji

Pacific Coast Events Producer Darlene Underwood says the majority of locally-produced music is based around the island reggae genre.

The Ladies of Jazz is an event scheduled for the 23rd hopes to revive Jazz in the local music industry.

Underwood adds a number of locally famous artists who started their careers around jazz such as the Vude Queen Laisa Vulakoro.

The Ladies of Jazz is an inaugural event that hopes to launch Jazz back into the local music industry.

The group will feature legendary jazz guitarist, Tom Mawi, his daughter-in-law- Annie Mawi, Laisa Vulakoro, Josephine Dass and Sassy.

“The Pacific music industry is getting quite commercialized, it’s growing, it would be nice to encourage, It would like to see young musicians and performers move to jazz because it’s a totally different outlet from reggae.”

Ladies of Jazz will be held on Saturday the 23rd of November at Shenanigans in Suva.
