Dr Mahendra Reddy has resigned as the chair of the Fiji Commerce Commission after he was named as a candidate for the FijiFirst political movement.
Dr Reddy says he’s also taken leave as Dean of the School of Economics at the Fiji National University.
“If I don’t win this election which is quiet unlikely, the probability of which is negligible given the kind of support I have seen. You know the position of the Commerce Commission is not by application, it is by appointment – so whichever the government is in power and if they want my services at that point in time I will think about it. But people have to move on in life. I have always said to my colleagues at FNU that FNU is not the end for me and same applies to Commerce Commission… Commerce Commission is not the end for me.”
Section 24 subsection 1 of the Electoral Decree states any public office holder is deemed to have vacated that office at the time at which his or her signed nomination is delivered to the Supervisor of Elections.
