Department highlights consumer fireworks safety

The Mineral Resources Department is warning the public that fireworks are not toys but powerful pyrotechnic products.

Director of Mines, Raijeli Taga, says under the UN Hazard Classification system only some fireworks are consumer fireworks which are permitted for sale over the counter for private use.

Taga says the consumers should only purchase fireworks from licensed retailers and only a person eighteen-years and above can make these purchase.

Taga also warns that making own fire such as bamboo guns is prohibited.

Non-permitted or prohibited fireworks include spherical or cylindrical shells, firecrackers which include woodpecker, strikers, bangers, lady-crackers, and flash-bangers, pulling/string crackers, aerial wheels, mines, rockets and rockets without stick.

Taga says fireworks is permitted between 5pm and 10pm on any other day and on Diwali day the permitted usage times are between 5pm and 12 midnight.
