Two jailed for aggravated robbery charges

Asesela Naureure has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment

The Suva High Court has sentenced two men charged with aggravated robbery-related charges.

Asesela Naureure has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment while Moape Rokoraicebe has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

The court heard that on 24th November 2016, the two hired a taxi from Tamavua to Kasavu, Nausori and robbed the taxi driver.

The two abducted the taxi driver, drove to Rakiraki, subjected the victim to grievous bodily harm, and damaged the taxi valued at $25,000.

High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo says the two while driving past Rakiraki were involved in an accident in Wairuku which damaged the taxi.

As a result, the victim was hospitalized for two weeks.

The court found the two men guilty of one count each of aggravated robbery, abduction and damaging property.

Justice Temo while sentencing the accused’s says that the duo acted in a cowardly manner as they tried to harm an elderly man who was trying to earn a decent living.

Justice Temo says Rokoraicebe has also been avoiding court and has not been in any of his cases after February 9th.

A non-parole of 10 years has been set for both.
