Child rights situational analysis to determine focus areas

September 26, 2018 6:46 pm

Save the Children Fiji is currently compiling a child rights situational analysis, aimed to inform the organization some key areas to focus on in the next five years.

Chief Executive Iris Low-McKenzie says child sexual abuse and violence are two issues that have topped the list.

She adds cases of children sexually assaulting other children were also highlighted along with many of them turning to internet shops to learn about sex.

“Even children are raising it as a concern. We had our children’s forum and one of the recommendations is that internet shops need to put in place some standards or some rules or guidelines around what children can and cannot access. Because the children were saying that their families are putting restriction but they can go outside the family and still be exposed to it through things like internet shops.”

Low-McKenzie says the analysis is based on data they’ve received and recent research done on children in Fiji.

The non-government organization is urging children to raise their concerns at forums as this will allow them to better understand some of the issues they go through.
