July 18, 2018 6:18 pm

The Sugar Cane Growers Council is urging cane farmers to cut and load green cane for this season’s crushing.

SCGS Chief Executive Sundresh Chetty says burnt cane reduces the amount and quality of sugar produced.

He says some field officers have seen that some farmers are still supplying burnt cane to the mills.

“We are saying that is we supply fresh green cane to the mills, our sugar make will be maximized and also we will get a better quality of sugar because the buyers of sugar need quality sugar.”

Chetty says making high-quality sugar from raw cane will also attract more buyers in the market.

He says some farms in Ba and Tavua were affected by Tropical Cyclone Josie and Keni which will affect the cane supplied thus supplying burnt cane will further affect the sugar production.
