The Employment Ministry will ensure that only responsible workers will be part of the Seasonal Workers Scheme.

With a long list of workers already on the work-ready pool, Employment Minister Jone Usamate says they will only choose the best to attract more employers to Fiji.

He says choosing these responsible workers will be done by the selected communities themselves and no longer by the Ministry.

“All the Pacific Island countries are trying to get their numbers up, if we have some workers who go and run away and don’t do what they suppose to do, the demand for Fijians workers will drop. So If i keep on letting people from one village even though they have not met up to what they are suppose to do to keep going, they will not want us back. So in order to improve that, the people we choose that go there are to be committed to the work”

Usamate says they will continue to ban villages for four years if workers from these villages tarnish Fiji’s reputation in the Seasonal Workers Scheme.

More than 200 Fijians are currently working under the scheme.
