Bag search to be done upon entry into nightclubs

August 23, 2019 12:35 pm

In an effort to tackle the illicit drug problem, night club operators are now doing spot checks on patrons entering their premises.

Downunder Pub Fiji Owner, Chris Cooke says their security officers have been briefed on what to look out for.

Cooke says the drug problem in Fiji is a serious concern and they’re strict on ensuring that not a single sachet ends up in the club.

“You don’t want your bags searched – you don’t come in. We’re searching for knives, drugs and all sorts of things. So it’s an issue now – the drugs and hopefully, it doesn’t get any worse.”
Pub Director, Caroline Wainiqolo says doing checks at the door is a challenge as people sometimes can be very tactical.

“We don’t know where they put it. They can put it in their pocket or inside their underwear and they go and do it in the toilet and stuff like that.”
Deputy Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says doing spot checks in clubs is also part of their night operations.

He adds they will continue to carry out operations to ensure Fijians are safe from criminal elements.
