Government continues to assist cane growers

Good news for Sugarcane growers as they will continue to benefit from the government’s grant assistance .

This also includes subsidies on fertilizers and weedicides.

Under the Fertilizers Subsidy Program growers will continue to receive a subsidy cost of $25.59 which is 56% of the cost of fertilizers.

Growers will only have to pay $20.00 of the total price of $45.59 per 50kg of fertilizers.

Under the Weedicides Subsidy Program, 55 percent of the price will be paid by Government following the allocation of $1m in the program in the 2019-2020 national budget.

All growers will need to place an order through the Fiji Sugar Corporation for eligibility and can only place orders for quantity of weedicides required for the existing area under cane production.

Meanwhile, through the Sugarcane Development & Farmers Assistance Program, growers can access grant assistance which encourages them to plant new cane and increase cane production.

$4m was allocated to the program in the 2019-2020 national budget.

The Ministry of Sugar Industry says ongoing support and implementation of policies including reducing input and cane planting costs of cane growers encourages boost in production.
