PNG sweats on keeper ahead of Fiji match

May 26, 2014 1:03 am

The Papua New Guinea football side is hoping for a miraculous recovery by injured goalkeeper, Koniel Vagi, before the match against Fiji at the OFC Under-20 Championships.

Vagi injured himself in the 1-all draw against American Samoa yesterday at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

PNG coach Wynton Rufer says Vagi is a key player for them and they need him for the Fiji game.

“The tournament is about five games and it’s very difficult for all teams as every two days we have to play. With Vagi he had this dislocation of the knee cap two months back. He has recovered quite well from that, his first game back from injury was against the Solomon Island and he has done quite well. We believe he has now reinjured the knee, which means he probably will not play the next game, but miracles do happen and we always looking for miracles.”

The two teams meet at 2.30pm tomorrow.

In other games, New Caledonia takes on the Solomon Islands at 5pm, before American Samoa and Vanuatu clash at 7.30pm.

Fiji currently leads the points table with six points, followed by PNG and Vanuatu on four points each.

American Samoa and the Solomons have a point each, while New Caledonia has no points.
